Day 1: The Great Escape (Delhi NCR to Nainital)

Our adventure kicks off bright and early between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM from Delhi NCR. Let’s be entirely honest: if you aren't waking up questioning your life choices and regretting every hour of sleep you missed, are you even doing a proper Indian road trip?

Leaving the chaotic concrete jungle behind, the highway unfurls like a promise of better things. But before you get too lost in your travel playlist, heed these battle-tested words of wisdom:

  • Pro-Tip #1 (The Cab Chronicles): If you are booking a cab through MMT (MakeMyTrip) or any trusted brand, snap a crisp, clear photo of the kilometer meter before you roll out of your driveway and another one the second you reach your destination. Also, a sneaky heads-up: while highway tolls are officially included in your upfront booking cost, that lovely little environmental entry fee will pop up like an uninvited relative asking for cash. Be prepared to bear that surprise expense yourself!

  • Pro-Tip #2 (Fuel Drama): If you're crazy enough to drive your own car, fill up your tank the absolute second you spot a gas station on the highway. CNG stations on the winding hills are rarer than a peaceful Monday morning, and waiting in those endless, soul-crushing queues is an initiation rite you want to minimize. Keep your FASTag heavily loaded unless you enjoy the financial humiliation of paying double at the toll gates!

  • The Mandatory Pit Stop: No road trip from Delhi NCR is legally complete without a pit stop to freshen up and refuel. Our traditions dictate a mandatory brunch stop at McDonald’s—because nothing says "we are going on a healthy mountain retreat" quite like biting into hash browns and fries at 8:30 AM. Load up on snacks, crank up your favorite tunes, and let the winding ascent welcome you to the cool embrace of the mountains.

We finally rolled into Nainital and hit the absolute jackpot on accommodation. We checked straight into Hotel Lakeside, perfectly nestled right on the vibrant Mall Road. Even better? Hotel Lakeside is home to Cafe LakeSide, widely celebrated as one of the most popular and energetic cafes in all of Nainital, where the vibe is cozy and the food is top-tier.

A golden rule carved in stone from our trenches: Do your research before booking, and make sure your hotel is genuinely on Mall Road—not some cardio-inducing, calf-shredding 2 kilometers above it where you need a Sherpa and an oxygen tank just to reach your bedroom door!

For lunch, we didn't have to wander far to find our spiritual food home. We stumbled upon an absolute legend nearby called Café de Mall. We feasted like royalty on jeera aloo, rich dal makhani, steaming rice, and piping hot roti with authentic, soul-warming dhaba-style flavors that made us want to track down the chef and offer them a permanent spot in our household.

After shaking off the initial travel fatigue, we stepped out onto Mall Road for our evening ritual: indulging in our very first pahado wali Maggi of the trip paired with steaming hot chai (or a trusty Diet Coke). We wrapped up the evening by devouring a legendary, deeply comforting traditional Kumaoni thali from Shiva Restaurant in Bara Bazaar, followed by a sugar rush at Sakley’s, where we treated ourselves to heavenly baked goodies.

Belly full, heart happy, and completely exhausted, we crashed hard on our cozy beds at Hotel Lakeside—ready for whatever glorious chaos Day 2 had in store.

Day 2: Boats, Deceptive "7 Points," and Candied Bunnies

Enjoy a lazy morning, but don’t sleep the entire day away! Freshen up, stretch those legs, and get ready because today is packed with enough twists and turns to rival a daily soap opera.

We started our morning with a quintessential boat ride on Naini Lake. Honestly? I was terrified. Water deep enough to swallow civilizations makes me question my entire existence, and I was fully prepared to skip it. But enter boat wale bhaiya, standing right outside our hotel like a masterclass in modern marketing. He possessed elite personal-selling skills that could have convinced a cat to swim, and before I knew it, I was wearing a life jacket and stepping into a boat. I am forever grateful I didn't let fear win.

  • Bonus Hack: Because Hotel Lakeside is situated right near the middle of the lake, taking the boat ride allowed us to glide straight across toward the ropeway station. Two birds, one stone, zero extra walking! Efficiency at its finest.

Once we stepped off the boat and reached the port area, we hit a classic tourist crossroads. Enter a new breed of local salesmen who have mastered the dark arts of persuasion, trying their absolute hardest to convince us to ditch the ropeway and instead explore the legendary "7 Points" around the north side of Nainital.

We chose the 7 points adventure (though let's be real, counting them accurately is a philosophical mystery of the universe). If you're driving yourself or hiring a local cab, here is the exact glorious trail we conquered:

  1. Snow View Point: This spot is technically the rooftop of a café. You may or may not actually spot the distant Himalayas depending on the weather gods, but the panoramic view still completely slaps. Don't forget to explore the government-run cooperative shop here, where you can purchase amazing local handwoven sarees, traditional bichhu ghas (nettle) sandals, or herbal oils that local elders swear by for joint pain. Bonus science fact we learned: Devdar trees are the natural air conditioners keeping Nainital pleasantly cool, even when the plains below are melting!

  2. Nainital View Point: A breathtaking, unobstructed bird’s-eye view of Naini Lake that makes you feel like a majestic eagle surveying its kingdom from the clouds.

  3. Horse Stand: Where you can grab a traditional horse ride leading up to Tiffin Top, Dorothy’s Seat, and Land’s End for maximum historical and equestrian energy.

  4. Lovers Point & Suicide Point: Exactly the same geographical cliffside with a dramatically contrasting, wildly poetic name, offering killer views that will make you gasp. (Does it officially count as one point or two? The universe may never know, but the photos look incredible).

Our cab dropped us back near Mall Road, but our legs weren't ready to quit yet. We swung by the historic Bandstand to click a few mandatory vacation pictures, then walked toward the sacred Shri Maa Naina Devi Temple while debating which exact street corners were used to shoot the iconic Bollywood sci-fi classic Koi Mil Gaya. After offering a peaceful prayer and grabbing a quick bite of local Kumaoni street food near the temple gates, we hit Mall Road and made a non-negotiable stop at the iconic Narain's Candle Shop, proudly walking out with the cutest handmade bunny candle ever crafted by human hands.

We capped off the day right where we belonged: lounging on our hotel balcony overlooking the shimmering lake, watching a stunning sunset that felt straight out of a watercolor painting.

Day 3: Zoos, Cable Cars, and Mall Road Therapy

We kicked off our morning with a hearty breakfast of Heavenly Veg Cutlets, Aloo Parathas and an amazing Coffee right at our hotel's home turf, Café de Mall.

Today was designated on our itinerary as our "chill day"—which, knowing our travel DNA, still involved a mild leg workout and a brief existential interrogation of our life choices.

We attempted the infamous Nainital Zoo.

  • The Brutal Reality Check: Government-operated shuttle cabs drop you off at the lower starting point, and then the vertical trek begins. It features fantastic high-altitude views of Naini Lake and great photo ops, but the path is steep, relentless, and feels like it ascends straight into the stratosphere. We respectfully retired from this mountain-goat expedition halfway up to preserve our knees, but if you possess iron legs, lungs of steel, and unshakeable psychological grit, please go conquer it for us!

For those skipping the vertical zoo workout, the much more civilized alternative is taking the Ropeway Cable Ride that we deliberately bypassed yesterday for our cab adventure. It treats you to soaring, bird-like views, crisp mountain air, and fun adventure activities like ziplining right at the upper station.

After recharging back in our room and soaking in the off-season Mall Road peace from our hotel balcony, we stepped out for our sacred evening ritual. We dove headfirst into incredible, spicy chaat and our millionth round of pahado wali Maggi at Dilli Chat (conveniently located right in front of Naveen Juice & Coffee Bar beside HDFC Bank), paired with aggressively kadak masala chai from a roadside vendor. Naturally, we couldn't leave empty-handed without buying even more handmade woolen winter accessories from the local aunties lining Mall Road, because aggressive winter shopping is basically an Olympic sport.

Day 4: Spiritual Highs and Lakes Galore (Kainchi Dham to Sattal)

Today was the undisputed heavyweight champion of our itinerary—action-packed, emotionally grounding, and physically demanding from dawn till dusk. We asked our hotel staff for a reliable cab reference, and as absolute luck would have it, his own son took us out for the ultimate local spin. We rolled out between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM sharp to beat the tourist rush and claim the day.

Dedicated to the revered Param Pujya Baba Shri Neem Karoli Maharaj, this place radiates a profound, palpable spiritual energy that washes over you the moment you walk in. If you've read his life story or watched the Hanuman Ansh movie, the emotional connection here is unreal. Be respectful, collect your sacred prasad, and soak it all in. Arriving early morning gave us the priceless gift of peace and quiet before the massive afternoon crowds descended.

Also known universally as the Temple of Bells, this unique shrine is dedicated to the regional God of Justice. The tradition here is genuinely fascinating: people who feel they have been wronged or carry heavy, unresolved personal prayers write down their appeals or legal grievances on paper and tie them securely with a brass bell to pin at the temple walls. Locals swear with absolute conviction that if your prayers come true, you must return to tie an even bigger bell. Just brace your thighs for a mountain of steps on the way up!

A slight plot twist here—we initially thought this was the famous Hanuman Garhi temple established by Neem Karori Baba himself, but nope, we were delightfully mistaken! Still, the experience was wonderful. You enter the temple complex through an immersive Vaishno Devi-style cave leading to multiple hidden inner shrines. Completely exhausted, famished, and visiting the Annapurna Mata Temple right as lunch rolled around, we were warmly invited to partake in the community bhandara. We ate the most comforting, delicious daal, washed our own metal utensils, made a humble donation, and walked away with full hearts, realizing the old truth: jo hota hai ache ke liye hota hai (everything truly happens for a good reason).

Stops 4 to 6: The Epic Lake Symphony

  • Bhimtal: Famous for its picturesque mid-lake aquarium (housed in what used to be a floating restaurant). We strolled across the sturdy bridge at the Bhimtal dam, grabbed our mandatory roadside Maggi and beverages, and basked in heavy nostalgia recalling when we first visited back in 2017.

  • Nakuchia Taal: Known famously as the lake with nine corners, it’s a hub for adventure sports like ziplining, boating, and shikara rides. Mini-Warning: Our driver tried to play rogue tour guide and steer us away from the local market and lakefront, pretending that area is a commercial resort. Stay sharp, folks! The lake is heavily tree-lined from all sides, offering limited open viewing areas, but we didn't let a minor detour lower our high spirits.

  • Sattal / Sita Taal: Undeniably the absolute winner of the entire lake tour! It’s still relatively unexplored compared to its neighbors, meaning the tourist crowds were wonderfully sparse—partly because we arrived right around noon. There's a scenic Ram Bridge located right in the middle dividing Sattal on one side and Sita Taal on the other. You can cross this bridge for a gorgeous hike alongside the water.

    • The Crown Jewel of Snacks: Right at the start of the Ram Bridge sits a legendary Fresh Fruit Ice Cream Roll vendor. We devoured a mango roll and a mixed fruit roll made right in front of our eyes with genuine, farm-fresh fruit. You could taste the pure freshness in every bite! Naturally, we paired it with—you guessed it—more Maggi, because calories on vacation don't count.

After returning to Hotel Lakeside and looking out over Naini Lake from our room, my restless heart whispered a dangerous little phrase: "We need one more boat ride." Despite my lingering water fears, we sprinted across the road to the ticket counter and enjoyed a serene, golden-hour boat ride on Naini Lake, this time feeling completely at peace.

We ended our epic day right on our beloved hotel balcony, enjoying packed food and hot tea sourced from nearby vendors as the sun dipped majestically below the mountain ridge.

Day 5: Farewell, Nainital!

All good things must eventually come to an end, and today was the bittersweet curtain call of our mountain romance. We packed our bags with heavy hearts and a truckload of memories to sustain us for the next few months until our travel bug inevitably becomes restless again.

We kicked off our final morning by hopping into our pre-booked MMT cab by 8:30 AM, we made one last emotional pit stop before officially leaving the valley flats to devour—what else?—one final round of mountain Maggi! We refueled with classic aloo paratha and thick lassi at Rajaji Dhaba on the highway, windows rolled down, watching the hills fade in the rear-view mirror as we rolled comfortably back into Noida by 6:00 PM flat, officially surviving the mountain trip of a lifetime.

Until next time, hills! Keep the Maggi hot, the boatmen persuasive, and the lakes sparkling.

Let’s be honest—your feed needs those misty lake views and your soul desperately needs that post-hike Maggi therapy. Don't just dream about the hills; make it happen! Smash that like button, drop your thoughts in the comments, and share this with the friend who officially owes you a road trip.
